Mix 1 oz. Chelsea Handler, 1.5 oz. Nora Ephron, finish with a twist of Tina Fey, and you get Ali in Wonderland, the uproarious, revealing, and heartfelt memoir from acclaimed actress and comedian Ali Wentworth. Whether spilling secrets about her quintessentially WASPy upbringing (and her delicious rebellion against it), reminiscing about her Seinfeld “Schmoopie” days and her appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The View, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, or baring the details of starting a family alongside husband George Stephanopoulos, one thing is for sure—Ali has the unsurpassable humor and warmth of a born storyteller with a story to tell the quirky, flavorful, surprising, and sometimes scandalous Ali in Wonderland.

“Ali Wentworth is funny and warm and crazy all at once. Like Barbara Eden. But on something. Like crystal meth.” —Alec Baldwin

"I beLieve this is Ali's first book...I think she's a great comedian, but this book fell short. Talked about her growing up, privileged years (which I did not know about). It was just o.k. Will I read her other books now??? Probably not."

Ali in Wonderland And Other Tall Tales Ali Wentworth 9780061998584 Books Reviews

  • Ali does have a way with words on occasion, and I did chuckle out loud several times, but this book felt a little stilted - as if she was wanting to feel comfortable about the things she was writing about, but in her core she really wasn't. Relate-ability is also challenging here - she grew up in a very affluent family with access to people and places and experiences that most people cannot relate to which would be fine it the tone were different. What I did find relatable were the human aspects - the fear, the near-gang rape story, the emotionally abuse relationships she entered into, the slow realization that her parents weren't perfect and that they formed her, and that after finding several horrible therapists she found a good one. But all of this also felt like we were just skating on the surface. Disappointing overall.
  • The book is easy to read and entertaining. The author is like a fascinating story teller at a party. You want to hear every detail because they are all painted so fully. And when it's done, you walk away happy and refreshed. You are left to believe every word and not give a wit if portions of it have been skillfully embellished. One had better not read this for insider knowledge of celebrities. Nowhere does she needlessly name drop. In fact you never once learn her mother's historic contributions or her husband's last name. This author is not relying on the fame of others to carry her, somewhat self centric, view of the world. A very comfortable and engrossingly light read.
  • When Ali has been a guest host on The View, I have thought she was the best guest co-host. When they announced that Joy Behar was leaving in August, 2013, I was hoping they would replace her with Ali. My 4 sisters and I had our "annual sisters weekend" and were talking about this and how much we loved Ali, so I ordered copies for all of us and sent them to everyone after our weekend. When I read the book, I thought it was a little slow at first but was sure that it would get better.

It did, but it wasn't the "laugh out loud" book that I was expecting based on how funny she is on The View. Perhaps if I had gotten a narrated book by her that would have made the difference in hearing her telling the stories. She is amazing candid about her life and the book is very well written. On The View, she cracks me up with her quick wit, snappy one-liners and funny expressions. I guess I was expecting that same thing in the book, but a book doesn't lend itself to that in the same way.

I still hope that she gets "the nod" to come on The Views!
  • Ali Wentworth's background and career are certainly one-of-a-kind. The book is very funny, insightful and well written. She's the most compelling when she describes the aspects of her life that are so unique to her, like growing up in the rarefied world of Washington politics, boarding schools and then Hollywood. Her sense of humor and intelligence is unique in the blend of brash, in your face honesty and knowing inside perceptiveness that has made her a star. There are aspects of it where I would have preferred a bit less schtick and more in-depth personal stories. But overall, it's a great read.
  • I beLieve this is Ali's first book...I think she's a great comedian, but this book fell short. Talked about her growing up, privileged years (which I did not know about). It was just o.k. Will I read her other books now??? Probably not.
  • Everyday happenings most of us have lived through...but through her eyes, a different perspective, it brings back memories in a new light...a funny bone light
  • I am not a light-hearted, skip-through-life sort of person, and I am generally am turned off by humorous books because I usually just don't "get them." However, Ali Wentworth's book was hysterical--I had tears running down my face from laughing so hard. I quickly learned not to read this book in public (like on the subway) after having one or two episodes of bending over double and cackling aloud. As for the critical reviews--this is not meant to be a social commentary on our times. Ali is not writing Charles Dickens. Take it for what it's worth a delightful FUNNY book.
  • I enjoyed this as I did the others.

I enjoyed this book as much as much as I enjoyed her other two books. I will read her next one if a new one comes out.
