Self-esteem is essential for psychological survival. It is an emotional sine qua non - without some measure of self-worth, life can be enormously painful, with many basic needs going unmet. One of the main factors differentiating humans from other animals is the awareness of self the ability to form an identity and then attach a value to it. In other words, you have the capacity to define who you are and then decide if you like that identity or not. The problem of self-esteem is this human capacity for judgment. It's one thing to dislike certain colors, noises, shapes, or sensations. But when you reject parts of yourself, you greatly damage the psychological structures that literally keep you alive. Judging and rejecting yourself causes enormous pain. And in the same way that you would favor and protect a physical wound, you find yourself avoiding anything that might aggravate the pain of self-rejection in any way. You take fewer social, academic, or career risks. You make it more difficult for yourself to meet people, interview for a job, or push hard for something where you might not succeed. You limit your ability to open yourself with others, express your sexuality, be the center of attention, hear criticism, ask for help, or solve problems. This book is about stopping the judgments. It's about healing the old wounds of hurt and self-rejection. How you perceive and feel about yourself can change. And when those perceptions and feelings change, the ripple effect will touch every part of your life with a gradually expanding sense of freedom.

SelfEsteem Third Edition Matthew McKay Patrick Fanning 9781458724632 Books Reviews
- I have struggled my whole life with self worth. I was recently introduced to Cognitive Behavior Therapy and it was like a new light shone on my world. The way my brain is wired ISN'T permanent. I CAN re-train my thoughts to be healthy and supportive.
This book is written in such a way that I can take my time, digest each chapter, practice the understandable and applicable exercises and NOT feel overwhelmed. I started this book 3 months ago and just finished today. I took notes, highlighted, worked the exercises and FELT the changes in my life. The companion worksheet downloads on their site (they provide all the info) were awesome.
This book is a game changer. Worth EVERY penny. - This book is a gem! I'm a psychologist and I "prescribe" it to all my clients. Deficits in self esteem are often the foundation for most addiction and mental health difficulties in adolescents and adults. Even when armed with a good understanding of cognitive distortions and the necessary skills to restructure the unhealthy internal dialogue that precedes negative mood and behavior, people will often sabotage progress if they don't like themselves and don't think that they're worthy of being happier or less anxious. This book address "the pathological critic" - the internal voice that is responsible for the sabotaging behavior and that stymies psychotherapeutic progress - and presents a simple and manageable approach that works!
- This book may deter some people because of the title and think they don't have a problem with their self-esteem. But don't be deceived this book is fantastic and can help with all kinds of things like anxiety, stress, inner critic, difficult feelings, understanding yourself and why you do the things you do and behave certain ways, etc. It personally has helped me with anxiety and my inner critic but really everyone can learn something from this book and will help you learn about yourself.
- This book provides valuable lessons to building self-esteem in those who lack confidence in their abilities, or who have a disfigured view of themselves. The book also teaches parents how to nurture self-esteem in their children. This is a must read for everyone. I’m grateful to have read this book. It has transformed my life and thinking for the better!
- I've read many books on Buddhism, Eastern Thought, confidence, communication and connection. Name a self-help category and I promise I've read at least a few titles. They were all a little helpful, but none ever come close to this book. I've always found myself excited to read a new title and quickly absorbing everything the author had to say. I'd spend the next few weeks making some behavior modifications, and getting some positive results. However, over time many things I'd learned would slowly fade away and unsure where to look, I would decide to try another title. This book is different, it focuses on changing the YOU--that thing that makes your decisions.
It's so easy to read other titles as an escape from reality where you teach yourself a set of gimmicks secretly hoping their ideas will someday make you the person you want to be. These authors know better, they know that the way you've been taught to think will make you slide back to where you started every time no matter what they tell you, so they start in a different place. First they teach you about the nature of self-esteem (these chapters alone will be an eye-opener. They teach you how your mind takes in information, processes it, and how your upbringing and experiences have effected your self-talk. Through dozens of real life examples (some of which can really hit home) and many exercises, the authors lead you on a journey towards understanding, healing, and happiness.
As a result of using this book, I've overcome social anxiety, become more productive, and learned more than I can explain in this review. Both scientific and compassionate, this is the greatest book I've ever read.
On a side note, examining this book in the context of Buddhism or Jiddu Krishnamurti is highly fascinating.
Update 12/07/11-- After you've finished this book, try Come to Your Senses Demystifying the Mind Body Connection. It's the most helpful self-help book I've ever read.
Update 01/15/12-- Then get this Healing the Shame that Binds You (Recovery Classics). - Great book full of good and practical advice on realizing our value and worth. information that one could use in everyday life. Its like having your own personal one on one therapist
- We use this book in my college classes. The authors demonstrate some tried and true suggestions to help people suffering from low self-esteem. I would suggest it for anyone who would benefit from self-esteem help.
- Every human being has an almost continuous internal monologue going on. Chock full of explanations and examples, this book can teach you to be aware of and change the monologue to increase your love, understanding and compassion for yourself and for others. If applied, this book can help you undo negative perceptions and coping strategies that are hindering your life.
